Look a little closer

The pop in your ears on an airplane is not the eardrum suddenly opening. It is the sensation of pressure equalizing as air moves through the Eustachian tube between the middle ear and the surrounding cabin.

The middle ear is an air-filled space behind the eardrum. It connects to the back of the nose and throat through a narrow passage called the Eustachian tube. This tube is usually closed but opens briefly when you swallow or yawn.

During ascent, lower cabin pressure lets air in the middle ear expand and escape relatively easily. During descent, cabin pressure rises and air must move inward. The passage is less likely to open automatically in that direction, so fullness and pain are more common while landing.

Swallowing, yawning or chewing moves muscles around the tube and can help equalize pressure. A very gentle Valsalva maneuver—closing the mouth, pinching the nose and easing air toward it—is another method, but force is unnecessary.

A cold or allergy can swell the tube's opening and obstruct airflow. A persistent pressure difference may cause severe pain, temporary hearing loss and, rarely, eardrum injury. Pain or blockage that does not clear after landing warrants medical attention.

The popping moment is therefore usually a sign that balance has returned, not that something broke. Staying awake before descent and swallowing frequently can be enough to open the small passage and match pressure on both sides of the eardrum.
