Look a little closer

The Rosetta Stone helped unlock Egyptian hieroglyphs because one stone carried versions of the same royal decree in three scripts. The surviving fragment, made in 196 BCE, contains Ancient Greek, Egyptian Demotic, and hieroglyphs. Scholars of the early nineteenth century could still read Greek, so that section provided a known message against which the unfamiliar scripts could be compared.

The task was not a mechanical word-for-word substitution. The texts differ in length and wording, and the knowledge of how to read hieroglyphs had been lost for centuries. Hieroglyphs were also not simply pictures standing for objects. The writing system could use signs for sounds, words, or ideas in different combinations, so a successful decipherment needed to explain how the system worked rather than merely identify a few drawings.

An early breakthrough involved the oval frames around royal names, called cartouches. By comparing the place where the Greek text named Ptolemy with repeated groups of hieroglyphs, Thomas Young showed that some signs could record the sounds of a king’s name. That challenged the common belief that hieroglyphs were only symbolic pictures with no phonetic role.

Jean-François Champollion built on that work and brought knowledge of Coptic to the problem. Coptic is a later stage of the Egyptian language written mainly with Greek letters and was still readable in the nineteenth century. Comparing the Stone with other inscriptions, Champollion showed that hieroglyphs could represent Egyptian sounds as well as foreign names. He announced his decisive results in 1822.

The Rosetta Stone was therefore not a solitary magic dictionary that supplied every answer. It was comparative evidence: a bridge between a readable language and a forgotten writing system. With that bridge, scholars could test hypotheses across more texts and eventually read ancient Egyptian documents as language rather than as a collection of mysterious images.
