Look a little closer
Many bats do not fly through darkness with their eyes closed. Some use vision as well, but many add a sensory method called echolocation when finding food and avoiding obstacles. They produce sounds, listen for the echoes bouncing back from objects, and use those echoes to estimate where things are and what they may be like.
A bat can send out a brief call through its mouth or nose. The calls are often at frequencies people cannot hear easily, although different bat species use different sound patterns. A quick return generally means an object is near; a later return means it is farther away. Tiny differences in arrival time and loudness at the two ears also provide directional clues.
Echoes can convey more than distance. Their strength, timing and frequency content can contain information about size, surface and movement. A flying insect produces changing echoes as its wings beat. When approaching prey, a bat can repeat calls more rapidly, updating its information fast enough to guide a changing flight path.
Some bats produce a very rapid sequence of calls just before a capture, often called a terminal buzz. That does not mean echolocation creates a flawless three-dimensional picture like a camera or a science-fiction radar screen. Its usefulness varies with species, habitat, prey, background noise and how strongly a particular object reflects sound.
The phrase blind as a bat is misleading. Many bats have useful vision and combine it with echolocation, smell and learned knowledge of their surroundings. Their nighttime navigation is not one magical sense; it is a flexible system for interpreting the sounds they make and the echoes that return.
That combination explains why a result measured in one laboratory setting should not be treated as the ability of every bat everywhere. The useful question is which cues a particular species can use for the task directly in front of it, not whether all bats navigate in exactly the same way.
