Look a little closer
Active noise-cancelling headphones do not remove outside sound by magic. They reduce it near the ear by generating a signal with an opposing phase. Microphones listen to surrounding noise, electronics calculate a response in a very short time, and the headphone speaker plays that response. When the original and opposing pressure changes overlap near the ear, part of the disturbance cancels.
The principle is sound superposition. Two waveforms that are close in size and opposite in phase can combine into a smaller pressure variation. Real headphones may use microphones outside the cup, inside the cup or both. The calculation is not merely a copied upside-down wave, because the path through the cushion, ear canal, speaker and surrounding space changes with fit and with the listener.
Active cancellation tends to work best for relatively steady, lower-frequency sounds such as an aircraft engine or an air conditioner. Sudden speech, claps and higher-frequency sounds change quickly and are harder to predict and cancel completely. That is why physical passive isolation from an ear cup or ear tip remains an important part of overall noise reduction.
Expecting complete silence is a misconception. The system is most useful for reducing sound pressure in a small region around the ears. It does not erase sound throughout the surrounding room or guarantee that every important warning signal disappears. When situational awareness matters, a transparency mode or an open ear can be the safer choice.
Noise cancellation also is not a method for playing music in reverse. The system measures unwanted ambient sound separately and tries to reduce that component, while music or a call is reproduced as the wanted signal. It needs battery power because microphones, signal processing and the extra speaker output must operate continuously.
Its benefit is reduced listening effort in some environments, not guaranteed protection from loud sound. Safe listening still depends on volume, duration and awareness of the surroundings.
