Look a little closer
A chameleon does not photograph its surroundings and copy any background colour at will. Each species has a limited range of possible colours. Quiet greens and browns can help with camouflage, but dramatic changes are often associated with social signals such as courtship, competition, or stress. Temperature can affect colour as well, so changing hue has more than one possible function.
One key part of the mechanism is a layer of reflective skin cells called iridophores. In the panther chameleon studied in detail, an upper layer contains an ordered array of very small guanine crystals. Altering the spacing between those crystals changes which wavelengths of light are reflected. Under the same illumination, that structural adjustment can make the skin appear to shift in hue.
When the crystals are closer together or farther apart, they reflect different ranges of colour. This is an example of structural colour: instead of changing only by mixing pigments like paint, the animal changes how microscopic structure returns light. Pigment-containing cells and reflective structures work together, so the colour we see is not explained by a single kind of cell.
The mechanism is not equally spectacular in every chameleon species. The rapid, vivid changes most often discussed in research are especially clear in certain species and adult males. Bright displays can warn rivals or signal mates, while darker colours can absorb more light and may assist warming. The balance among communication, camouflage, and temperature regulation varies with species and situation.
Chameleon colour change is therefore not simple background copying. It combines light, microscopic skin structure, physiology, and behaviour. A resting colour on a leafy branch can be protective, but the most flamboyant changes often function as displays to other chameleons. It is more accurate to think of a controlled, limited palette than of perfect invisibility in nature.
