Look a little closer
A 3D printer does not place ink on a flat page all at once. It divides a digital design into a sequence of very thin cross-sections and builds a three-dimensional object by adding those sections in order. This is why the approach is called additive manufacturing. Instead of cutting material away or filling a mold, it places material where the shape needs it.
The printer first converts a model into layer-by-layer paths in a process called slicing. A nozzle, laser, or other device then places or solidifies material at precise positions in each layer. Many home machines push heated plastic filament through a nozzle. Industrial systems can use metals, resins, ceramics, powders, and other materials, each with different temperatures and solidifying methods.
After one layer is finished, the next is placed on top. If layers are thin enough, a surface can look smooth from a distance, though close inspection may reveal a stepped texture. Overhanging parts can be difficult to build in midair, so printers may create temporary supports. The result may need support removal, surface finishing, or heat treatment after printing.
A major advantage is the ability to test complex internal forms and customized parts relatively easily. Designers can alter a file and make a prototype without waiting for a new tool or mold, which is useful for low-volume production and iteration. It is not always the fastest or cheapest method for every product, however. Quantity, surface quality, material strength, and build time all affect process choice.
A 3D printer is better understood as a manufacturing tool that translates a digital design into layers of material, not as a magic box that instantly makes anything. File accuracy, layer thickness, material, machine calibration, and post-processing all shape the result. Watching an object grow from the bottom up makes the conversion from screen geometry to a physical thing unusually visible.
