Look a little closer

A country’s coastline can look like it ought to have one fixed length, but the number depends on how it is measured. Trace bays and headlands with a long measuring stick and the result is relatively short. Use a shorter stick that follows smaller bends and inlets and the result grows. This is known as the coastline paradox.

A coast is not a smooth circle. Waves, currents, erosion, deposition and geology produce bends at many sizes. A smaller measuring unit captures features that a coarse map leaves out: small coves, rocky projections and winding channels. Even with the same endpoints, changing the ruler length or map resolution changes the sum.

This does not mean a real shoreline repeats an identical pattern at every possible magnification. Coastlines can show statistical fractal-like behaviour over a limited range, with measured length increasing systematically as the measurement scale shrinks. Physical limits such as grains of sand, the chosen tide line and map-making conventions prevent the question from becoming a search for one infinitely precise number.

That is why coastline figures from different sources need their definitions beside them. The map scale, treatment of islands and estuaries, and choice of tidal boundary all matter. Two published values can differ while each is appropriate for the survey method that produced it.

The coastline paradox does not show that maps are wrong. It shows that a measurement is tied to a question and a tool. A navigational chart, an administrative boundary and an ecological survey may need different resolutions. Coastline length is a useful summary of a complex boundary only after the measuring rules have been made clear.

For that reason, a reported coastline length should be read as a measurement with a scale attached, rather than a property existing independently of observation. The definition is part of the result, not a footnote.
