Look a little closer
A building can change color or an object can move, yet a brief interruption at the critical moment may keep the difference unnoticed. This is change blindness. It does not mean the eyes registered no detail. Rather, a change may fail to reach awareness when attention does not connect the same object across the two views and preserve enough information for comparison.
In the classic flicker task, an original photograph alternates with a modified version, with a blank frame between them. Without the blank, a sudden local motion signal marks the changed position and attracts attention. The blank creates a large visual transient across the whole display, masking that local cue and forcing the viewer to search the scene region by region.
Everyday vision contains similar interruptions during blinks, rapid eye movements and movie cuts. The visual system quickly extracts a scene's meaning and the objects relevant to current action, but it does not necessarily maintain every color, orientation and surface detail as one stable internal photograph. A detailed representation becomes more reliable when attention selects the object that is needed.
Detecting change requires selecting an item before the event, retaining some of its features, matching it to the same item afterward and judging the difference. Failure at any link can hide even a large alteration. Changes to central or meaningful objects are generally found sooner, but importance does not guarantee detection if attention never establishes the comparison.
Change blindness resembles inattentional blindness but is not identical. In inattentional blindness, a person misses an unexpected object that is present because attention is committed elsewhere. In change blindness, the missed information is a difference between an earlier and later state. Both show that having the eyes open does not automatically make every visible detail available for report.
The effect is not simply a defective visual system. Prioritizing information relevant to current goals is an efficient use of limited processing resources. Where a miss is costly—security monitoring, medical imaging or quality inspection—procedures should not rely on unaided memory. Side-by-side comparison, systematic region checks and appropriate breaks help ensure that important changes receive focused attention.
