Look a little closer

A building's color or an object's position can change dramatically, yet a brief interruption at the moment of change may keep us from finding it. Change blindness shows that we do not maintain every scene detail like a complete photograph.

In the classic flicker task, an original image alternates with a modified one, separated by a blank frame. Without the blank, change creates a local motion signal; the interruption removes that cue and makes search much slower.

Similar disruptions occur during eye movements, blinks and film cuts. The brain quickly extracts meaning and important objects but does not continuously compare every location's color and orientation at full resolution.

Detection requires attending to an object before the change, retaining its state and matching it to the later view. If it was not selected or the link between views is broken, even a large difference may have no comparison partner.

Change blindness is related to but distinct from inattentional blindness. The latter misses an unexpected object that is present, while change blindness misses a difference between a scene's earlier and later states.

Movie continuity errors often escape notice because attention follows story and characters. In safety inspection and analysis, side-by-side images and systematic region checks can reduce reliance on memory alone.
