Look a little closer

A fully visible object can go unnoticed when attention is concentrated elsewhere. This is not simply poor eyesight. It is inattentional blindness: limited attention fails to select unexpected information for conscious recognition and report.

In a famous experiment, participants watched two teams pass basketballs and counted passes by one team. Meanwhile, a person in a gorilla suit crossed the center of the scene, yet many participants did not report seeing the visitor. The object was neither tiny nor instantaneous; a demanding task had tied attention to a particular event.

The result conflicts with the idea that vision records every part of a scene equally like a camera. The brain prioritizes objects and events relevant to a current goal. Light from an unexpected object may reach the eyes, and some visual processing may occur, without the event necessarily progressing to conscious recognition and later report.

Detection is not determined by the unexpected object's size alone. Similarity to attended objects, the demands of the main task, motion, speed and the viewer's expectations all matter. Recent work also shows that being more physically conspicuous is not always the same as being more noticeable within the observer's task.

Inattentional blindness does not mean people are always oblivious or that someone who missed the gorilla is dishonest. The same observer may notice completely different elements when given another goal. Nor can a detection rate from one gorilla video be treated as a fixed percentage for every display, person and real-world setting.

In driving, medical imaging and security monitoring, it is prudent not to assume that visible means noticed. Procedures that reduce reliance on one person's attentional set—such as checklists, rotating roles or independent review—may help reduce misses, but they cannot eliminate them. Their actual value depends on the task and design and should be validated in each domain.

When someone asks how a plainly visible hazard was missed, the explanation should include the attentional task active at the time, not only memory or honesty. Inattentional blindness does not make the world before the eyes disappear; it reveals that less information can be consciously selected than is available to see.
