Look a little closer

Given the same study time, spreading reviews across separate sessions usually supports longer retention better than massing them together. This spacing effect appears across vocabulary, concepts and skill learning in many experiments.

Immediate repetition feels easy because the material remains active in working memory. Familiarity can create confidence without requiring much retrieval. After a delay, partial forgetting makes the learner reconstruct the information instead of merely recognizing it.

When that difficulty remains manageable, reactivating the earlier memory and connecting it with a new context can strengthen long-term access. Combining spacing with retrieval practice—trying to recall before checking—often provides more benefit than rereading alone.

There is no universal perfect interval. Material needed next week and knowledge intended for years require different schedules, while difficulty and prior knowledge also matter. The useful point is often before a memory disappears but after recall has become effortful.

Spacing does not magically replace understanding or reduce every learner's total work. Repeating cards without meaning or waiting so long that every attempt fails can be inefficient. Explanation, examples, problem solving and corrective feedback still matter.

A practical pattern is to learn, check briefly later, retrieve again after a day or several days, and then extend the interval. Items recalled successfully can return later; missed items can return sooner. The schedule adapts review to the state of the memory.
