Flat-pack furniture can be frustrating to assemble and imperfect when finished. Yet the person who built it may value it more precisely because their effort is attached to it.
Experiments with furniture, origami, and construction tasks found that people often place a higher value on successfully completed objects they made themselves.
Effort alone is not always enough; completing the task matters. The finished object becomes evidence of competence as well as a possession, changing its value in the builder's mind.
