Look a little closer
Misleading information encountered after an event can become mixed with details from the original experience and alter a later report. Psychologists call this the misinformation effect. If someone sees one tool in a scene but later reads a description naming another, for example, the later item can sometimes be reported as though it had been present from the beginning.
This happens because memory is not a video file stored intact and replayed on demand. During an event, people do not encode every detail equally. During recall, the mind reconstructs an account from the traces that remain, existing knowledge, and information acquired since the event. Reconstruction is useful for making coherent sense of experience, but it also creates opportunities for later details to enter.
One important process is source monitoring: deciding not only what information feels familiar, but where it came from. A detail may have been seen directly, heard from another witness, read in a report or imagined while thinking about the event. As contextual information weakens over time, a plausible later suggestion can be mistakenly attributed to the original scene.
Researchers do not treat every misinformation error as proof that the original memory was erased. An inaccurate report can arise from several histories, including weaker access to the original detail, acceptance of the new account, confusion between sources, or a response made under uncertainty. A person may retain both versions yet answer with the newer or more socially persuasive one.
Susceptibility varies with conditions. Incomplete attention to the original event, a long delay, plausible wording, a trusted source, repetition, and a leading question can all make misleading details more influential. Warnings that misinformation may be present and prompts to consider the source of each detail can reduce errors in some settings, although no technique makes recall perfectly protected.
Confidence is not a simple guarantee of accuracy. Once a misleading detail feels integrated into a coherent memory, a person may sincerely believe it came from direct experience. This is why eyewitness interviewing should avoid questions that presuppose an answer or expose one witness to another’s account, and should begin with open prompts that allow an uninterrupted report.
The misinformation effect does not mean that all memories are useless or false. It reveals a trade-off in a system that continuously connects new information with older experience. That flexibility helps people understand the world, but it can also detach a detail from its true source. For consequential events, recollection is strongest when considered alongside contemporaneous records, independent evidence and the sequence in which later information was received.
